Mount Gay Eclipse is a golden Barbados rum that matures for at least 2 years in oak barrels. Mount Gay is proven to have been produced since 1703, which is why it is marketed as the oldest rum in the world. The name derives from the fact that the sugar cane growing area of rum is located on a hill called Mount Gay in the St. Lucy area of northern Barbados. Sugar cane cultivation began in the 17th century when the area was still called Mount Gilboa and five small sugar cane plantations were established there. At the beginning of the 18th century, William Sandiford bought up most of the land and combined it into the Mount Gilboa plantation. Sandiford's son sold the plantation to John Sober in 1747. Since he and his son Cumberbatch lived in England most of the time, Cumberbatch's friend Sir John Gay Alleyne took over the management of the plantation. When Alleyne died in 1801, Cumberbatch wanted to honour Alleyne by renaming the plantation Alleyne. Since Mount Alleyne already existed, the plantation was now called Mount Gay.Tasting notes:Colour: gold. Nose: sweet, fruity, exotic aromas, vanilla, caramel, oak. Taste: Fruity, sweet, apricot.
