In 1994, Angelus displayed scent of stone fruits and beef jerky. The wine's tannins were big, even if they were well-integrated. Today, the wine has a meaty nose with bacon and spice, and the texture is supple and ripe. It's a vintage that lingers with a salami note. Though the wine’s tannins are still big, they're integrated.

This 1989 Bordeaux will be enjoyed in good condition for a long time, most likely for many years. It is a vintage that has the power, richness and density to last for decades. This is one of those wines where it is more likely that the bottle will become empty while the wine is still alive in the bottle. This wine still has all the attributes to continue to improve.

In 1988, Château Angelus underwent extensive improvements. These include improvements in quality, production and a visit by an oenologist. At the same time, the vineyard was extensively reworked, which involved the felling of all wood, replanting with entirely new vines and renovating the winery. The ageing cellar has been equipped with new racks, while the wines’ more delicate treatment has achieved a remarkable increase in quality.

Angelus is the flagship wine of Chateau Angelus, exclusively produced from the finest vineyards of the appellation Saint-Emilion Grand Cru. The nose leads with aromas of red fruits and rose petals, followed by chocolate and savory notes. On the palate, a rich mouthfeel and cascading red fruit flavors fill the palate. The finish is long, with a smooth and elegant texture.

Château Angélus is a Premier Grand Cru Classé A estate on south-facing slopes in Saint-Émilion, on the right bank of the Gironde in Bordeaux. The château was so named because of the presence of church bells that could be heard chiming from the original plots of vineyards, amplified by the natural amphitheater the hill of Saint-Émilion creates.

The site that is now Château Angélus was added to the small estate of the de Boüard de Laforest family in 1920 and, by 1985, the estate had 20 hectares (50 acres) of vines. Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, took over the company reins at this time and began to introduce more modern ways of doing things. He began to change the vineyards to work as sustainably as possible, something that was seen as out of the ordinary for a winemaker in Saint-Émilion at the time.

In 1996, Château Angélus, which had been classified as a Grand Cru Classé in the Saint-Émilion Classification of 1954, was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé. In 2012, the château was promoted once again to the top rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé A, joining only three others, châteaux Ausone, Pavie and the famous Cheval Blanc.

The Château Angélus grand vin is made of a blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, and is aged in new oak for 18 months. It then spends at least five years in bottle before it is released, but can be aged for much longer. Angélus's concentration, weight and structure allows the wine to stand the test of time. Annual production amounts to around 100,000 bottles. The château's second wine, Le Carillon d'Angélus, was first made in 1987 and accounts for about 30 percent of the total production.

Hubert de Boüard has increased his marketing campaigns to reintroduce the world to Château Angélus, especially after rising to the heights of Premier Grand Cru Classé A. It has become associated with the James Bond films, a 1982 vintage featuring in Casino Royale and a 2005 in Spectre. In 2016, de Boüard's daughter Stéphanie bought her father's shares in the property, becoming sole owner. Her father remains as a co-director.
